Anonymous Coward Mails Sheriff Wagner Flyer

Hell's a poppin' early before the next Sheriff's election. This flyer was recently sent to local public officials, but no one claims responsibility for it. It was mailed in a legal size envelope, hand addressed in a woman's handwriting. It doesn't spell out any alleged mistakes, but apparently is the first salvo in the political world of local law enforcement. The last Sheriff's race was hard, bitter and expensive. The next one could be more so. If you have a guess or clue about who's behind this flyer, please leave a statement in the comment section.

FEMA Says Alexandria Documents In D.C.

The City of Alexandria has presented a letter of map revision to the "Feds" which is now under review in Washington D.C.
Region 6 FEMA engineer Shona Gibson says it's possible that favorable action on the letter could possibly erase the "free board" problem with the Bayou Rapides levee in Alexandria.
FEMA has said there are "several" deficiencies in the levee, POSSIBLY including parking lot sites at Rapides Regional Medical Center and across from The Pentecostals complex. Gibson has said the City of Alexandria provided the plans and evaluation of the Bayou Rapides Levee, but did COA engineers actually do the job or was the work done by Owen & White, Inc. of Baton Rouge?
The blogsite "Jacques Barack" located city ordinance 184-2008 passed in June of 'o8 which authorized the mayor to hire Owen & White. But if the parking lots must be altered or levee sections replaced, FEMA says the DEVELOPERS will be held responsible, whether it's the City of Alexandria OR a private entity. Gibson also stated there may be a "closure plan" for the parking lots, but it was NOT provided by the City of Alexandria.

Wild Gun Fight On Shirland Avenue

3 suspects are on the loose and 2 Alexandria men have gunshot wounds from a wild Sunday afternoon shootout on Shirland Avenue. APD reports a woman ran outside her house when she heard gunfire and saw 2 black males firing handguns at each other. One shooter was in the front yard of 1312 Shirland and was shot in the leg, the other shooter was standing beside a dark gray suburban in the middle of the street. The street shooter was hit and fell to the pavement, then 2 men in the SUV picked him up and put him in the vehicle. Police found the vehicle used to take victims to Rapides Regional Medical Center. An '07 Chrysler C300 was riddled with bullet holes.
The gunshot victims are a 33 year old male of Hufffman street, the other is 23 years old of Shirland Avenue. The gun fight happened about 4:30 Sunday afternoon. It's a miracle no one was killed.

Bogus Alexandria Electric Bills Since 2006?

Extremely grave allegations are focused on the way the City of Alexandria bills utility customers.
An expert with impeccable qualifications known as "The Naked Utility" claims Alexandria utility bills have been incorrectly calculated since October of 2006. It's alleged officials have violated the city code by using a 6 month rolling average of fuel costs in the calculation of the energy cost adjustment. This development only adds fuel to the fire over criticism of the recently approved deal between the COA and CLECO that killed all allegations of fraud by CLECO. For complete details on this breaking story, go to "the naked utility" or "Central La. Politics".

Will Parish Tax Collections Get Superbowl Boost?

Sales tax collections in Rapides Parish are down almost a million dollars per month this year. February taxes, collected in January, were down $958,398.07 or 12 % from last year. Hopefully the week before the February 7th Superbowl will give a big boost to March tax collections. February is a short month, but shoppers were spending money before the Superbowl like it was Christmas weekend. IF we don't get the Superbowl tax boost, collections could be down a 3rd straight month, perhaps more than a million dollars. Parish tax coffers are feeling the pinch of the economic slowdown with drastic measures and decisions facing local officials. Records at the Rapides Court house show a negative economic trend continuing. Multiple filings of judgements, promissory notes, evictions, open accounts, garnishments, bankruptcies and notices of seizure continue unabated. By the way, the local generic media have not mentioned the drastically reduced tax intake. They probably don't think it's newsworthy.
